
Social Innovation Academy
Program Overview
This is a 6-month program for students aged 15-19 to learn how to create social change by addressing pressing issues in their community.
This program is in partnership with the City of Toronto, University of Toronto, and Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. It connects youth with cutting-edge thinking and practical experience of solving community issues.
Prior year topics have included youth homelessness, mental health, indigenous issues, the environment, and more. See examples of last year’s projects.
Workshops
6 online workshops taught by industry experts. Our students learn how to:
Research and refine a problem space
Come up with and test their solution
Develop a compelling story
Assemble a strong pitch presentation
Demo Day
At the start of the program, you will be assigned a team. Along with your assigned team members, you will not only develop and execute a pilot of your proposed solution but also pitch your way to win a grant (up to $1,000) to fund and scale your project on Demo Day.
Mentorship
You will have the opportunity to connect with mentors who are subject matter experts in the nonprofit industry or social venture industry.

Workshop Details
Orientation
This session will go through what they can expect from the program. Participants will also be given everything they need to succeed in the SIA program.
Inspire to Lead Panel
Develop a deeper understanding of social issues like equal education and how youth can contribute in a meaningful way. Hear what it’s like to build a social venture from industry professional.
Research + Outreach Workshop
Learn how to properly conduct research, send professional emails, and lead meetings that clearly convey your ask.
Ideation Workshop
Understand why researching the problem of the issue you want to address is important and the role of business models in entrepreneurship and social change.
Go to Market Strategy Workshop
Participants are now armed with the skills to go out to market to test their ideas. They will reach out to their target audience and report back on their initial impact assessment to their project advisors, mentors, and other teams.
Building Skills for Change Workshop
Learn how to tell your story, how to connect with others, and how to motivate to take collective action.
Pitch Workshop
Improve your ability to communicate effectively with key audiences. This workshop will include presentations, mock sessions, critiques and coaching.
Impact + Development Workshop
Learning how to think about quantifying social impact. This will help participants develop a clear, evidence-based idea of if and how their social impact projects are resulting in a meaningful difference.
Demo Day
Participants of the program will get a chance to pitch their projects to a panel of investors at the Conference to determine which projects will be given additional resources to scale their idea.
